Ford Concentrates on the Past to Bring Vivacity to the 2024 Bronco Sport

Ford has gone back in time for a new look on its 2024 Bronco Sport, adding an all-new Free Wheeling special-edition trim, along with a new Black Appearance Package. Both will be based on the Bronco Sport SUV’s Big Bend trim level. The Free Wheeling’s most noticeable styling cue is a five-color reflective graphic that is inspired by the appearance of the Ford Freewheeling series of the 1970s and early 1980s, utilized on the F-100 and F-150 pickup trucks, Econoline van, and Bronco. The package typically included graphics with orange, red, and yellow lines that were intended to evoke a sunset.
Additions to the 2024 Bronco Sport
On the 2024 Bronco Sport, the Free Wheeling trim also adds 17-inch high-gloss black wheels with red accents; a black roof, bumpers, and mirrors; a silver-painted grille with a two-tone Bronco badge; exterior graphic hues in the stitching and seat inserts; and orange accents on the dashboard. Interestingly, the idea for the new trim package first debuted as a one-off concept at Ford’s display at the 2021 SEMA Show, the Specialty Equipment Market Association trade event in Las Vegas, showcasing the newly-launched Bronco Sport reimagined with the 1970s-style graphics. Granted, it may be a bit over-the-top for some people’s tastes, but drivers still have the Heritage Edition if they decide to go that route.
Interior Details
Step inside, and the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport Free Wheeling brings the same stripes to the seats. Red, yellow, and orange accent stitching appears throughout the interior, while red accents are also found on the door cards and center stack. Indeed, each Free Wheeling even gets a plaque on the center console, which is a nice touch if owners desire something that feels a bit unique.
It is worth noting that since it is based on the Big Bend, this Free Wheeling trim still receives the turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. The smaller engine generates 181 horsepower and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The larger, more robust 2.0-liter EcoBoost is only available on the Badlands trim, unless the brand adds special editions at the top end of the lineup in due time.
Cosmetic Appeal
There is colorful and bright, then there is something a bit more stealthy. Consumers are adamant about what they want, and that extends to their vehicles. According to Jason Hyde, Bronco Sport Marketing Manager, “Bronco Sport customers have been asking for the stylish black finishes available on the F-150, Maverick, and Mustang, and we’re delivering with the new Black Appearance Package.” He elaborated further, claiming, “It also builds on the night sky gauge cluster graphics that Bronco Sport customers see that plays a startup screen featuring the Milky Way.”
The new Black Appearance Package, which can be incorporated only to the Big Bend trim, adds a Carbon Black grille with two-tone Bronco lettering; matte black hood graphics; black and smoked chrome badges; matte black 17-inch wheels; and a black roof. The package also includes a black bucking Bronco badge on the airbag cover and contoured sports seats.
As mentioned, Ford announced it is providing the Black Appearance Package due to the popularity of similar option packages on the Maverick, F-150, and Mustang. The new editions are available for ordering. In addition, rounding out the rest of the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport changes, two new colors are available. Azure Gray and Desert Sand join the color palette, even though neither of those can be combined with the Free Wheeling. That said, consumers can get the Black Appearance Package with those hues, though.
