In May 2023, when Ford confirmed that its future electric vehicles would adopt the NACS (North American Charging Standard), the company also revealed that gaining access to Tesla’s Supercharger network by spring 2024 formed part of this deal. Seemingly overnight, nearly all automakers with an electric vehicle on sale in the United States moved to eliminate the Combined Charging System (CCS) in favor of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard. The change came quickly after Tesla announced that various automakers would have access to Tesla’s extensive network of chargers.

Given that Ford’s current electric vehicles utilize a different charging standard–and, therefore, a different plug–the Blue Oval pledged to offer a complimentary fast charging adapter to owners of the company’s existing electric vehicles and make the transition simpler. Now that we are on the cusp of spring 2024, Ford’s President and CEO, Jim Farley, took to X on January 31, 2024, and shared the latest update concerning this significant shift. “I’m pleased to confirm that eligible #MustangMachE & #F150Lightning owners in the U.S. + Canada can reserve a complimentary adapter starting soon,” Farley declared in the social media post.

Burning Questions

As mentioned, Farley confirmed that all eligible buyers of the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Ford Mustang Mach-E would soon be able to reserve a complimentary Fast Charging Adapter. That said, the automaker has not yet explicitly confirmed what the eligibility criteria are. It is also worth noting that neither Farley nor Ford have revealed any dates at this point as to how soon eligible users can reserve the complimentary charger.

Additionally, the company has yet to release details regarding when these existing Ford electric vehicles can latch onto the Supercharger Network or the manner in which eligible customers can order the charging adapter. Readers can expect the manufacturer to make formal announcements about the dates in the near future, though.

Making the Change to the NACS

The decision to accept standardized charging is being seen as a collective effort within the automotive industry to address one of the preeminent concerns of potential electric vehicle customers: charging infrastructure compatibility. It is also part of an expansive industry-wide push to establish a more cohesive charging ecosystem, cultivating interoperability and minimizing potential inconveniences for electric vehicle owners.

Indeed, the collaborative effort aims to build a future where electric vehicle users can seamlessly charge their automobiles across different charging networks, removing the need for numerous adapters or concerns about charging compatibility. To that end, by the 2025 model year, all of Ford’s electric vehicles will make the switch to the NACS charging standard, meaning that all of them will come outfitted with the new NACS charging plug.
