For the last 46 years, the Ford F-Series has represented the best-selling truck lineup in the United States. The all-new 2024 Ford F-150 is a continuation of that storied heritage. The current generation F-150 received a full makeover in 2020 when it came out as a 2021 model-year vehicle. Even though there are relatively few players in the full-size pickup truck market, it remains highly competitive, primarily between Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet/General Motors.
The big truck market has always been a money-fueling segment for Ford, and it is more important than ever in 2023 as the company has to invest heavily to launch electric vehicles. The profits from truck sales fund many of those efforts. That is why Ford and others have to keep the pickups fresh.
Expectations for the 2024 Ford F-150
The 2024 F-150 has no fundamental alterations, and most of the aluminum sheet metal is unchanged. The visual exterior modifications have been made to the front fascia, wheels and tail lamps. The 2021-2023 pickup trucks had a series of grille designs for different trims, but all featured the motif of a similar daytime running lamp surrounding the headlamps. It was meant to evoke a C-clamp. Probably the most interesting exterior change is the availability of the new Pro Access Tailgate. In addition to the traditional swing down, the center 36 inches of the tailgate can now swing out sideways to the right.
For 2024, the entry-level XL and XLT also get a new design that is a bit of a callback to F-150 pickup trucks of the early 1980s. For example, the grille now extends to the outer edges of the face and surrounds the now-standard LED headlights. A horizontal daytime running lamp splits the stacked high and low beam lights. The C-clamp theme remains on the Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Platinum Plus trims but now extends down to wrap around the fog lamps in the bumper. Revamped tail lamps finish off the rear end look with premium trims adding LED lighting that appears more sophisticated.
The Interior
The cabin of the 2024 Ford F-150 is effectively carryover in style, with the most significant changes being the adoption of the 12.0-inch infotainment display unit as standard across all trim levels and some new materials and hues on the premium trims. It is worth noting that the lower trims previously had an 8.0-inch screen. In addition, the SYNC 4 system has been upgraded with a 5G modem, replacing the previous 4G LTE connection. The Limited trim is also being replaced by a new Platinum Plus trim for the 2024 model year.
Among the most noteworthy features enabled by connectivity is Stolen Vehicle Services. To clarify, when implemented, the pickup truck will automatically alert the owner’s phone if any attempt to steal or tamper with the vehicle is made. As a matter of fact, the Stolen Vehicle Service can also permit police to track the automobile and recover it. Moreover, the Blue Oval is enhancing BlueCruise hands-free driver assistance packaging on the F-150 for 2024. The BlueCruise hardware will be included as standard on all trim levels from Lariat and up and optional on the XLT.
Owners get a 90-day free trial of BlueCruise and can then opt for numerous monthly or annual subscriptions after that to continue utilizing it. The 2024 pickup launches with version 1.2 of BlueCruise that adds lane repositioning when passing large trucks and automatic lane change assist. Using BlueCruise on the F-150 should be improved with the optional heads-up display that is offered on this vehicle for the first time. Essentially, the heads-up display will have distinct display modes when used during normal driving, towing, and BlueCruise.
Beneath the Hood
Under the hood, Ford is dropping the previous base 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V-6 engine, and the 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 is now standard. The most notable change is that Ford plans to double production capacity for the hybrid.
