On August 28, 2023, Ford submitted a trademark filing, leaving enthusiasts to speculate. To clarify, Ford has been making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its promise of exciting new electric vehicles in the coming years. As part of its efforts to cover its innovations, the automaker has recently filed for trademarks and patents. One of the most intriguing trademarks is one titled “F-200,” which could indicate it is Ford’s highly anticipated T3 electric pickup truck.

Details from Ford CEO Jim Farley

CEO Jim Farley has been vocal about the futuristic charm of the truck, even comparing it to the iconic Millennium Falcon with a porch attached. Farley has emphasized that Ford is taking a novel approach to designing and assembling the truck, aiming to create a pickup that thrives in today’s digital age. He also mentioned that the company plans to continuously update the truck to add and refine capabilities and features.

Indeed, the CEO claimed in March 2023, “We’ve challenged ourselves to create a truck people can trust in the digital age.” He added, “This will be a fully software-updatable vehicle. Literally every morning you get into your truck that’s built here, it will be better and different, it will learn how you use it. We’re going to send software to it every day, every week, every month, every year to make your truck better.”

The Mystery Behind Project T3

Known as “Trust the Truck” or Project T3, the automaker’s electric pickup is expected to provide more robust vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology than the Ford F-150 Lightning. To offer context to readers, the F-150 Lightning boasts an onboard generator with numerous outlets. Even though it remains unclear where Ford will position the F-200 in its lineup, some speculate that it could be a midsize truck similar in size to the Ranger.

The recent trademark application for “F-200” does not provide specific details about the company’s intentions for the name. However, it serves to protect the name from unauthorized use. After all, the application covers “motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, and their structural parts.” While it is technically possible that the F-200 could be a new internal combustion engine-powered pickup, it is more likely to be an electric vehicle given Ford’s focus on electrification.

The Unveiling

Ford is expected to reveal the mysterious F-200 electric pickup in the 2024 model year. The vehicle will be manufactured at Ford’s new electric vehicle manufacturing facility, BlueOval City, in Tennessee. That said, the Blue Oval has encountered challenges in meeting the high demand for its F-150 Lightning but recently announced plans to triple production this fall (2023), increasing its annual capacity to 150,000 units. Ford also experienced a surge in consumer interest after reducing the prices of the F-150 Lightning in July of 2023.

This automobile will undoubtedly be different, and it might not even look like a truck, but Ford’s primary aim is for it to act like one. Once Ford filed for the “F-200” trademark, it certainly sparked elation among pickup truck fans and electric vehicle enthusiasts alike. As buyers eagerly await its debut in 2024, it is clear that Ford is determined to make a significant impact in the electric pickup market with the F-200.
