Ford has not presented a new named sub brand version of its groundbreaking pony car since 2001, when it launched the Bullitt edition. The seventh-generation Ford Mustang puts a stop to this trend with the potent Mustang Dark Horse trim. This is not simply an appearance package with cold-air induction that works for a few additional ponies and pound-feet. The Dark Horse serves as a far-reaching performance enhancement that sets the groundwork for Ford’s combustion vehicle racing endeavors. As such, this high-performance muscle car has been redesigned for 2024 but remains loyal to its heritage with rear-wheel drive and available V-8 power. With a collection of upgrades, the brand-new pony is effectively saddled for the future. Specifically, the Mustang sports car will be powered by a 5.0-liter V-8, revved up to 500 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque. Nonetheless, the Mustang GT is right on its heels, with a fitting rating of 480 horsepower. Include an optional exhaust improvement and power increases to 486 horsepower. EcoBoost trims undergo a slight boost to 315 ponies.

Pushing it to the Limit with the Coyote V-8

Even though there have certainly been more robust Mustang trims over the years, the fourth-generation Coyote V-8 found in the base 2024 Mustang begins with several revisions to guarantee emissions compliance in all applications, as well as improvements in performance, such as a higher-revving valvetrain and a twin throttle-body cold-air intake. In other words, the Coyote V-8 is the most powerful naturally aspirated 5.0-liter production engine ever provided by Ford. It operates on improved applications, especially internally, like a distinctly balanced crankshaft, more powerful camshafts, and forged connecting rods. More importantly, the modifications, while offering a slight boost in power, also assist the Mustang Dark Horse in reaching its extended 7,500 revolutions per minute redline.

As it happens, this fourth-generation Coyote engine is also located in the Mustang GT. Due to a brand-new dual-throttle body arrangement, it now has a standard 480 horsepower rating. However, its culmination of 486 horsepower can only be reached with the optional active performance exhaust system. Similarly, torque increases to 418 pound-feet with the exhaust upgrade or 415 pound-feet without it. Consumers planning to purchase the base trim Mustang should know that it comes with a cutting-edge turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. It has a new direct injection system and a host of other alterations that give the vehicle a bit more bang for its buck while simultaneously aiming for better fuel economy.

The primary goal is to establish a long-lasting bond between the automobile and its owner: “Every time someone gets behind the wheel of a Mustang, we know they want to feel that strong connection to their vehicle – and we’re just as invested in creating that bond. With the increased responsiveness you get from the new dual throttle bodies, we’re wringing every ounce of performance out of our engine so Mustang enthusiasts can have that experience,” elaborated Suzanne Robinson, Coyote engine program supervisor.

The fact of the matter is, with the combined availability of 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, the EcoBoost is, without a doubt, the most commanding base trim Mustang Ford has ever brought to the table.

Need for Speed

Ed Krenz, Mustang’s chief engineer, summarized it best when he said, “Mustang has always pushed the envelope. From Mustang GT to Dark Horse, this is our best 5.0-liter V8 yet. It’s naturally aspirated awesomeness. And Mustang EcoBoost fans are also getting a boost in power to make every Mustang more fun and visceral to drive.”
